Julie Shematz is a Florida based fine artist, psychotherapist, and the founder of Beauty From Ashes™ Ministries. Known for her advocacy and social work supporting survivors of human trafficking and abuse, Julie’s personal healing journey deeply influences her artistic expression.

She took her first oil painting class at the age of ten and has taught art for more than thirty years with an emphasis on art therapy since 2013. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Herron School of Art and Design and a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Florida Gulf Coast University.

Her artwork is recognized for its rich, vivid, and joyful color palettes, blending mixed media techniques with expressive eclecticism. Her backgrounds are rarely passive. They are active spaces filled with layers of shapes, symbols, or texturing that invite the viewer to look closer.  Much of her work reflects both the beauty and complexity of healing, faith, restoration, and personal transformation.

Through her artwork, lessons, and ministry, Julie provides pro bono counseling, mentoring, retreats, and creative healing opportunities for high-risk youth and survivors of abuse. Julie is available for commissions, including murals, individual and group art lessons, and art therapy sessions. She and her husband of 23 years, along with their animals, reside on a farm in the Tampa area.
